Mastering the DELE A2: A Guide to the Spanish Speaking Exam

Preparing for the Spanish speaking exam at the A2 level is a significant milestone for any language learner. This level, as defined by the Instituto Cervantes, validates that a candidate can understand and use everyday expressions and basic phrases to satisfy immediate needs.

The DELE (Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera) A2 is an internationally recognized certification. Unlike lower levels, the A2 exam focuses on the ability to communicate in common, everyday situations that require a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar topics.

What is Evaluated by the Instituto Cervantes?

The Instituto Cervantes structures the A2 speaking exam (Task 3: Expresión e Interacción Oral) to assess how well you can navigate basic social interactions. The examiners look for four specific criteria:

  • Coherence: Can you link sentences and ideas using basic connectors (and, but, because)?
  • Fluency: Can you maintain a conversation without excessive pausing or “searching” for words?
  • Grammar & Vocabulary: Are you using the correct tenses (Present, Preterite, and Imperfect) and vocabulary related to personal information, shopping, and local geography?
  • Pronunciation: Is your speech clear enough to be understood by a native speaker used to dealing with foreigners?

The oral exam usually lasts about 12 minutes, preceded by 12 minutes of preparation time. It is divided into three distinct tasks:

TaskFormatObjective
Task 1MonologuePresenting a brief, prepared topic (e.g., a past trip or a daily routine).
Task 2DescriptionDescribing a photograph and imagining the situation surrounding it.
Task 3DialogueA simulated conversation with the interviewer (e.g., a “role play” at a restaurant).

Key Topics to Study

To succeed in the Spanish speaking exam, the Instituto Cervantes suggests being proficient in the following functional areas:

  1. Personal Information: Describing your family, your home, and your educational background.
  2. Daily Life: Discussing your work, hobbies, and favorite activities.
  3. Needs & Services: Asking for directions, ordering food, or making purchases at a store.
  4. The Past: Being able to tell a simple story or describe an event that happened recently.

Pro-Tip: During the exam, don’t be afraid to self-correct. The Instituto Cervantes examiners appreciate it when a student notices a mistake and fixes it, as it shows high linguistic awareness.

Final Thoughts

The DELE A2 is not about perfection; it is about utility. If you can make yourself understood while following the guidelines set by the Instituto Cervantes, you are well on your way to earning your diploma. Focus on consistency, practice your “role play” scenarios, and approach the exam with confidence!
